Australian crystal opal is a natural opal with a translucent to semi-transparent body that reveals luminous flashes of color from within. Unlike many Ethiopian opals, which are hydrophane and can absorb water, Australian opal is generally less porous and more stable in everyday wear.

Fine crystal opal with vivid play-of-color is also relatively uncommon and highly sought after. PETRALO uses 100% natural solid Australian opals, never doublets, triplets, or synthetic stones.

Brief contact with clean water will not normally harm solid Australian opal. However, we recommend removing opal jewelry before showering or swimming, as soaps, chlorine, saltwater, and sudden temperature changes may affect the stone or its setting over time.

Opal measures approximately 5 to 6.5 on the Mohs hardness scale, so its surface can be scratched by harder gemstones and jewelry. Clean it gently with lukewarm water, mild soap, and a soft cloth, then dry thoroughly. Avoid ultrasonic or steam cleaners, harsh chemicals, high heat, and sudden temperature changes. Store your opal jewelry separately in a soft pouch to prevent scratches and impacts.
